Our Social Mission

When you order, we donate a book to a homeless shelter.

We at ProofreadingServices.com love reading, and we believe in doing our part to help make the world a better place. We want to spread the joy of reading to those experiencing homelessness.

We’ve adopted a one-for-one model, so for every proofreading order you submit, we’ll donate one book or the equivalent value to a homeless shelter to brighten the lives of disadvantaged children and adults.

How many people are affected by homelessness?

The UN estimates there are 100 million people without homes worldwide, including more than 550,000 in the US. The number of “street children,” a wider definition that includes children at risk of becoming homeless or who have homes but spend most of the day on the streets due to poverty or abuse, is also estimated at 100 million worldwide and 1 million in the US.

Why provide books to homeless children?

Homeless children are at a disadvantage in life, but reading can foster positive development and help them grow into well-adjusted, successful adults. It goes without saying that abundant reading in early childhood improves children’s language and literacy skills, with young children whose parents read to them demonstrating richer vocabularies and learning to write faster than their peers.

But the benefits don’t stop there. Reading to young children has also been shown to strengthen the area of the brain responsible for mental imagery, boosting children’s imagination. Furthermore, reading in early childhood can help stave off mental illnesses, including ADHD, anxiety, and other disorders, which about 20% of US children suffer from in any given year.

Why provide books to homeless adults?

Adults are, of course, past the crucial development stages of early childhood, but that doesn’t mean reading doesn’t have numerous positive effects on them. Homeless adults face a significant amount of stress, and while books can’t directly change their circumstances, they can provide much-needed relaxation and escape. In a harsh life of constant change and ambiguity, books provide a bit of joy and comfort. The destressing factor of reading has even been linked to increased longevity.

Because fiction offers an escape into a fantastical world and nonfiction broadens our horizons, reading can benefit all adults who are experiencing homelessness, no matter what types of books they prefer to read.

Join us in making the world a better place, one book at a time.
