Many Tanzanian children are held back by poverty.
Even though Tanzania boasts one of the largest economies in Africa, ranking 10th in the continent as of 2024, the East African nation lags behind in terms of its Human Development Index rating, coming in 31st out of 55. UNICEF identified in 2016 that 74% of all children in Tanzania live in multidimensional poverty, and the situation is exacerbated in rural areas, such as the village of Mikameni, where adults must leave behind their children to engage in agricultural or business activities as a means of survival. In the case of particularly young children, parents entrust their daily care to older siblings until they return home from a long day of work.
Many Tanzanian children, particularly those from poor or rural backgrounds, lack access to education, with only 27% of Tanzanian students enrolling in secondary school. This makes it exceedingly difficult for Tanzania’s youth to break the cycle of poverty.
The Hope for a Better Future Day Care Center Project is changing lives in rural Tanzania.
Located at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, just off the Tanzania–Kenya border, the village of Mikameni features a rich landscape, but life in the village can be harsh and demanding, and children are especially vulnerable. In the village, often called Chekereni by locals, situated about 50 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Moshi, Hope for a Better Future Day Care Center Project provides—with the support of ProofreadingServices.com— valuable education, nutrition, care, and opportunities to the disadvantaged children in the community.
The Center cares for around 80 children annually, promoting them to the local elementary schools as they grow old enough to attend, with children who attended the Hope for a Better Future Day Care Center Project demonstrating improved academic and social performance. The Center provides a space to play, socialize, and learn, with young students developing their literacy skills through Montessori methodology. Children at the center are also provided with at least two nutritious meals a day.

The number of vulnerable children in Mikameni in need of safeguarding and day care services exceeds what the project can currently provide.
