The classification of “Chinese” as a language can be tricky. Though conventionally considered a single language, “Chinese” truthfully refers more to a continuum of different but related Sinitic languages, the most widely spoken being Mandarin. The Chinese languages are largely mutually unintelligible when spoken, but thanks to the logographic writing system, they can be mutually understood in writing (albeit with some dialectal differences). But the characters are also split into two key groups: Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

While Simplified Chinese is used in Mainland China and Singapore, Traditional characters are used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Traditional characters retain history and etymology that Simplified characters have lost, and they have become an important way for Taiwanese and Hong Kong Chinese speakers to distinguish themselves from mainland China. While Traditional Chinese speakers can generally read Simplified characters with experience and guesswork, translating your content into Traditional Chinese provides much smoother communication and, given the tense political situation between China and Taiwan, can cultivate more loyalty in Taiwan.

Understanding the Chinese-Language World

Like in Mainland China, the primary language in Taiwan is Mandarin—the only difference is the characters. However, in both places, a number of smaller Sinitic languages are also widely spoken. In Taiwan, these are predominantly Hokkien and Hakka, also found in China.

Chinese is a largely isolating language with little inflection, so other than the characters, it may seem simple. Indeed, Chinese lacks a lot of the explicit grammatical features that other languages may have, primarily determining grammatical relations, tense, aspect, and mood with word order and auxiliaries. Chinese uses a subject-verb-object word order, although this can be somewhat altered by the topic–comment system. The positioning of oblique complements before the verb can also feel foreign to English speakers. Chinese also constructs relative clauses as genitive phrases before the noun they modify, a feature usually only found in verb-final languages. So, Chinese certainly has its share of complicated aspects. Fortunately, our Traditional Chinese translators are practiced experts in translating the language and can produce natural-sounding texts in both English and Traditional Chinese.
